The Meaning
of Mazavaroo

Mauritius may be a sandy speck in the Indian Ocean, but its cuisine is an enticingly eclectic mix of influences from all over the world. Despite this diversity of flavours, Mauritian people think that almost any dish - whether it be starter, street snack, or even dessert - can be enhanced by the addition of one special ingredient: a fiery chilli paste called 'Mazavaroo'.

Mauritians dollop it onto curries, mix it into noodles, and some even spread it on their baguettes like guava jam!

That's why the people of Mauritius are truly the original “Mazavaroo Club".

We want to extend an invitation to our friends and neighbours in London to join the club, too. Bring some sunshine to your doorstep - let us cook for you!

We are
Mazavaroo Club

We’re Andy and Sophie, partners in life and work. We love London, Mauritius, and food, so the decision to create Mazavaroo Club was a no-brainer. We live for the simple honest work of making something for others and the warm inner glow that comes from hearing “Blimey, that was nice!” after a meal.

Andy grew up in Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius. As a child he spent hours watching his mother cook and learning the family recipes, which are influenced by five generations of family life in Mauritius and a long line of Hakka and Cantonese ancestry.

In 2014, Andy and his Cordon Bleu-trained nephew Randy opened Marcel & Sons, a restaurant and takeaway in The Artworks in Elephant and Castle, which won a Timeout Love London Award three years running. Andy’s sister Deanie also played a key role and 2015, when Andy met Sophie, she began helping out too.

When The Artworks was redeveloped in 2019, the team decided not to seek alternative premises, instead moving onto new ventures. For Andy and Sophie, this meant looking for a way of working that would allow them to spend as much time as possible with their baby daughter. And that’s how the idea for Mazavaroo Club was born.

Today, we serve the Bol Renversé and Jai that were so beloved by Marcel & Sons fans, along with a selection of classic Mauritian dishes, from our purpose-built cookhouse.
